Annual Plant / Mill Trips
Every year the Guild runs two trips for approximately 25 industry newcomers to tour various printing plants and paper manufacturers. The spring trip, usually held in April, is in its 21st year and this year will visit Maple Press and Glatfelter Paper. The fall trip, usually held in October, is in its 15th year and visits Ecological Fibers and Acme Binding. Each trip is overnight and there is no cost to participants but spots are usually limited and fill up fast. Companies or individuals applying to attend must be Guild members or sponsored by an individual Guild member. Because of the restricted space, we limit the number of attendees to 2 per company. Information about the trips is emailed out to the membership approximately 2 months beforehand and attendance is strictly first-come, first-served. OUR NEXT TRIP IS October 18th-19th to Ecological Fibers and Acme Binding. We are currently taking names for interested individuals. Please send an email with your name and contact info to Steve Bedney at firstname.lastname@example.org to sign up. This trip is specifically geared toward junior-level industry professionals with little to no experience visiting a printing facility or paper mill.
The Lowdown: We will meet at 8:00 a.m. on 42nd Street between 8th and 9th Avenues by the Port Authority on Tuesday morning and travel by bus to Ecological Fibers in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, where guided tours of the plant will be given and a buffet lunch will be served. This will be followed by a short trip to Lunenburg, Massachusetts, for a tour of the other Ecological Fibers facility. The evening will be spent sharing a pleasant dinner at the Doubletree in Leominster, Massachusetts, where the group will also spend the night. Wednesday morning will be spent touring Acme Binding. The group will then return to New York City to arrive around 5:00 p.m.
The Fine Print: There is no cost for participants on this trip. Spots are limited and will be filled strictly on a first-come basis. Because of the restricted space, please limit your reservations to two per company. Additional names can be placed on a waiting list in the event of cancellations. Please include an e-mail address and telephone number, and specify if you require vegetarian meals. Participants will be notified of the details prior to the trip (around October 1).
NOTES: Companies or individuals applying for participation in the trip MUST be BIGNY members or, if your company is not a corporate member, you may be sponsored by an individual member from within your company. Nonmembers will be accepted, but will automatically be wait-listed and a spot on the trip is not guaranteed.
Finally, the bus will NOT make any unscheduled stops on the return trip to NYC to discharge passengers. We will return everyone to the point of origin at the Port Authority.
Basically Book Lecture Series
Basically Books is a series of Tuesday Morning lectures geared toward junior-level industry professionals. Our next series will be held TBD.
There will be publishing professionals speaking every week. This program is free and we will supply the bagels for breakfast.
Basically Books is available to BIGNY members and member corporations. There is limit of two participants per company; additional registrants will be wait-listed. If you are not a members and wish to attend, you will be wait-listed and notified if space becomes available.
