It sponsors educational seminars and trips, holds monthly informational programs, and helps raise money to support literacy programs.”

About Us

Established in 1925, the Bookbinders’ Guild of New York is a book publishing, manufacturing, and sales trade organization composed of professionals throughout the industry. The Guild holds monthly educational and networking meetings on current topics in book publishing, manufacturing, and sales. We sponsor charitable events to promote literacy in New York City and beyond, and hold educational trips and seminars for people new to the industry. The Bookbinders’ Guild also organizes an annual Book Show, where we celebrate and award the best in book design and manufacturing.

Originally called The Bookbinders’ Guild of New York, the Guild was started in 1925 by a group of thirty-five craftsmen from the many binderies in and around New York City, such as the George McKibben & Son, American Book-Stratford Press, H. Wolff, J. J. Little and Ives, Knickerbocker Press, J. C. Valentine, Van Rees, Charles Bohn, J. F. Tapley, Russell-Rutter, and others. These pioneers gathered monthly to discuss issues, common problems, and areas for improvement; and they invited the experts of their day to come in to help brainstorm about ways to improve their work. These discussions helped develop many of the processes that we take for granted today.

Through the years, the Guild membership profile has changed. Membership was restricted to manufacturing employees until the early seventies when publishing production employees were welcomed. In the late-seventies the first women were accepted in the Guild. In 1980 Alice Sanchez of Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, became the first female president. Over the past few years we have been striving to make our meeting topics less manufacturing specific and more informative to a wider range of people in the book business in general, and have been seeking to expand our membership into areas that weren’t previously represented.

In response to the changes in our industry, in 2010 we changed our name to the Book Industry Guild of New York and updated our logo to include a mirror image to reflect the changes going on in our organization and the overall industry.

The Guild’s monthly programs (running September through May yearly) provide an opportunity for our members to learn from guest speakers who are leading figures in their fields, as well as to socialize and network with people from all aspects of the book publishing and manufacturing industries.

We offer opportunities for junior level publishing people to learn from senior staff and representatives of major book manufacturers and publishers. “Basically Books,” our twice-a-year seminar, explains the book production and manufacturing process from manuscript to finished book. We hold two annual tours of book and materials manufacturers. Our fall trip visits a book repair facility and cover material plants. The spring trip tours a paper mill and a book manufacturer.

The Guild also hosts two large-scale events every year. In the Fall, we have the New York Book Show showcasing some of the best books published in the previous year. And the Barge Bash ends our schedule of events with a blast, in the early summer.
